The beauty about home remedies is the fact that home remedies are easy to make, the ingredients are handy, the preparation is not complicated and we do not need anybody to make them. In addition to this, they are organic in nature and are pocket-friendly. Let’s begin the list of home remedies for vaginal yeast infection.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar balances the natural pH of the vagina, which is a key factor in yeast growth. The malic acid present in it has anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Apple Cider Vinegar can be used as a home remedy for vaginal infections in not one but many ways:

  1. Prepare a wash: Add 3 tablespoons of unfiltered apple cider in 2 cups of water. Use it to wash the Vagina twice a day, until cured.
  2. Make a tampon concentrate: Mix Apple Cider Vinegar and water in equal part. Soak the tampon and insert it in for about 15 mins. Remove and wash with lukewarm water. Use once daily till symptoms relieve.
  3. Take a bath: Fill your bathtub with warm water and 2-3 cups of Apple Cider Vinegar. Enjoy the bath for 15-20 min, sitting in it with legs fold. Pat dry yourself and enjoy the bath once daily.
  4. Drink it by diluting 2 teaspoons in a cup of water. If you can develop a taste for it, drink twice for 10-15 days.

Aloe Vera

The beauty of Aloe Vera lies in its easy availability, i.e. in our back yard or garden. Aloe vera contains natural fibers, vitamins, amino acids, and certain essential enzymes. All these make it the best line of defence against Candida.

  1. Aloe Vera Juice: Take a fresh leaf and peal it. Collect the gel carefully and wash it thoroughly. Take about 2 tablespoons of this gel, blend it and mix it with plain water or any kind of juice you like. Drink daily for not more than two times a day for about 2 weeks.
  2. Topical gel: This gel can be applied directly on affected areas 2-3 times a day until symptoms are gone.

Caution: Oregano oil is a natural blood thinner. Thus should not be used with anti-coagulating medicines like aspirin, warfarin, heparin etc. Pregnant women are advised not to use it.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is used extensively in cosmetics and therapeutics for skin care. But it has its use in Vaginal Yeast Infection as well. It is a very strong antiseptic and thus could be used in diluted form.

  1. Prepare a wash: Add 5-10 drops of Tea Tree oil in 4 cups of water. Use it to wash the Vagina twice a day, until cured.
  2. Take a bath: Fill your bathtub with luke-warm water and a teaspoon of Tea Tree oil. Soak yourself in, legs folded, for about 20 mins.

Caution: Do not consume it. Pregnant women are advised not to use it.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil has been in use for vaginal thrush since time immemorial. Its benefits are praised even by ancient text like Ayurveda. It has Anti-fungal properties and is known to kill more than 50 Candida species. Many communities use coconut oil for cooking, and many more are known to use it for hair and skin health. It can be both eaten as well as applied externally:

  1. Eat it, Drink it: Coconut Oil could be used as cooking oil. And/or it could be consumed directly. You can drink 1-3 teaspoons of Coconut oil daily.
  2. Topically it can be applied to the affected area 2-3 times a day until you notice the change.

Boric Acid

It is so mild that it is used in eyes infections! Boric acid is a mild antiseptic-antifungal that can be used as a home remedy for Vaginal Yeast Infection when Azole-resistance develops.

  1. Once-a-week Wash: Mix 1 teaspoon of Boric acid in 2 cups of warm water. Apply it, leave for 5 mins and wash with lukewarm water.
  2. Suppositories: Boric acid suppositories can be easily made at home by filling a ’00’ size capsule with Boric acid. Insert it deep inside the vagina like a tampon at bedtime. Use not more than twice a week.

Baking Powder

My personal favourite topical remedy id Baking Powder. Many people recommend baking soda, but it leaves the area dry. The best part about Baking Powder is, it is not harsh on the delicate skin of the vagina.

  1. Paste: Make a paste by mixing equal amounts of water and baking powder. Apply it for 10 mins and wash with lukewarm water.

From my Personal Diary- Apply organic Yogurt or curd afterwards for 5 mins and wash with water. It gives better and faster results.

To decrease the colonization and infection of Candida, one of the best-considered options is the natural source of probiotics,i.e. curd or yogurt. Unsweetened yogurt and organic curd can be used as:

  1. Insert it in: Dip a tampon and insert in it for about 2 hours. Take out and wash with water. Use at alternate days for 7to10 days.
  2. Apply in on: Apply it directly to the affected area, leave for 20-30 mins, and wash. Repeat for one to two weeks or until relieved.

From my Personal Diary- Mix organic, farm-fresh honey (1 teaspoon) to double the amount of home-made curd or yoghurt prepared from farm-fresh milk. The relief time will fasten, especially in pregnant women. Let’s extend this list of home remedies for vaginal infection.

Garlic could be eaten or inserted in for mild Vaginal Yeast Infections.

  1. Eat: 2-3 cloves of garlic empty stomach with water, or include it in cooking.
  2. Insert peeled clove of garlic in the vagina like a tampon/suppository. Remove it in the morning and wash. Use it at alternate days until relieved.

The only problem that comes with garlic is the odour. The garlic odour stays for a long time, and with repeated use might become your natural smell!! This might be a big “off” for you and your partner.
